Packing  a supersonic punch, strengthening India’s missile capabilities, BrahMos missile has been in the news since it has come into existence. On Wednesday, BrahMos Aerospace CEO Atul Rane shared that BrahMos will be only sold to nations that are ‘friendly to India’. Also, only those nations can possess the hypersonic missile that are ‘acceptable to Russian government.’

Rane further added that BrahMos has gained attention of countries from Southeast Asia, Middle East, Latin America and Africa. He stated, “ BrahMos is the only supersonic cruise missile system in the world.”

It should be noted that BrahMos missile has been jointly developed by India and Russia.

What is BrahMos?

Touted as world’s deadliest supersonic cruise missile, BrahMos has justified its vitality hitting sea and land based targets even ahead of radar horizons. It has been designed in a way so that it can be launched in both vertical and inclined mode, in both mobile and static platforms.

The name BrahMos derives its origination from Indian and Russian rivers – Brahmaputra and Moskva. BrahMos Aerospace was created as a joint venture between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and Joint Stock Company “Military Industrial Consortium” “NPO Mashinostroyenia.” While India possesses 50.5% stake in the company, Russia owns 49.5%. The Aerospace was set up with a capital fund worth US$250 million.

What makes it the only supersonic cruise missile in the world?

BrahMos has gone through various test firings from Navy warships and it has showcased remarkable performance in terms of speed, accuracy and deadly munitions.  BrahMos is also credited with being the only missile system that has knocked down many targets in different directions during a test firing. This is termed as ‘Salvo Mode’ wherein the weapon can be launched within a time span of 2-2.5 seconds, all in different directions.

Not only this, the missile has also been tested in standing configuration from a moving Navy ship where BrahMos proved its vertical launch potential via the Universal Vertical Launcher Module (UVLM). UVLM is created by BrahMos.

BrahMos and the Indian Navy

The relation between BrahMos and the Indian Navy remains unparalled. The Navy deployed the missile system in 2005 and the deadly weapon system has been giving world’s best wartime weapons run for their money.

What are the special features of BrahMos?

BrahMos  missile system has some special features.

Why was BrahMos in the news lately?

In September 2022, Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with BrahMos Aerospace for acquiring additional dual-role capable BrahMos missiles for around Rs1,700 crore.

In June 2022, BrahMos Aerospace entered 25th year of its formation. BrahMos Aerospace received around 80 hectares of land in Uttar Pradesh for construction of a new manufacturing facility with an interim investment of Rs 300 crore. As per the official website, this facility has a potential to make 80-100 BrahMos missile systems every year.
