(Update 2:10 pm): More than 30 students were onboard a boat that turned over near Madhupur Patti Ghat along the Bagmati River in Bihar. Eighteen children have been reported missing in this incident which took place in the Muzzafarpur district of the state.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar told reporters that senior district officers, including the District Magistrate, had been directed to the scene of the accident and said aid and support would be given to the children’s families.

“Rescue operation is underway… I have asked the District Magistrate concerned to look into the matter with urgency. The state government will provide all assistance to the affected families.” he said.

The DM Muzaffarpur Ajay Kumar also said “The incident took place between 1030-11 am today. Teams of NDRF and SDRF rushed to the accident site.”


Search operations on going in Bihar

A boat carrying 30 children capsizes in the Bagmati river of the Muzaffarpur district in Bihar on Thursday. 20 people have been rescued so far after a search operation was launched.

The incident has created panic in the region and search for the remaining children continues.

According to media reports the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) team along with the police arrived at the scene upon receiving information and launched the rescue efforts.
