The Bihar government has now completed its controversial caste-based census. The long-awaited report was released by the Chief Secretary today (October 02). According to the report, it has segregated the percentage of the people belonging to various castes such as the backward class holding 27% of the population, while the extremely backward caste constitutes 36%.Now, the Scheduled Castes (SC) account for over 19% whereas Scheduled Tribes (ST) is nearly 1.68%. The upper castes or Savarnas, represent 15.52% of the total population of the state.Bhumihars constitute 2.86% of the population, Brahmins 3.66%, Kurmis 2.87%, Musahars 3%, and Yadavas 14%.The press conference to announce these findings was led by Development Commissioner Vivek Singh, who operates under the leadership of the Chief Secretary.Despite facing challenges and backlash from the opposition parties over caste-based surveys, the state government maintained that the survey was crucial for social justice.
