According to the official information, the death toll in the three-storey building collapse which was six on Sunday, has now risen to seven. The incident happened in the Bhiwandi city in Maharashtra’s Thane. On Sunday, the identified bodies were of Sudhakar Gavai, Pravin Chaudhary, Triveni Yadav. The building collapsed on April 29 afternoon trapping several people under the debris and the search and rescue operations are still on.

A senior official confirmed that the exact number of people trapped in the collapse is not known. According to the chairman of Thane Municipal Corporation regional disaster management cell, Avinash Sawant, clearance of the debris is ongoing as part of the search and rescue effort led by the National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force, the fire brigade, and municipal teams.

The officials also confirmed that the owner of the ill-fated building situated in Wardhaman Compound in Valpada in the Mankoli area has been detained. The building, which housed godowns on the ground and first floors and four families on the top floor, collapsed into a heap of concrete on Saturday noon.

In addition, two tempos and a container that had arrived at the godown for loading and unloading were crushed. According to Sawant, the rescue teams have cleared the upper level, but the first and second floors, where the majority of the workers in the godowns were located, have not yet been cleared. An additional official stated that rescuers are moving slowly because they must consider the chance that survivors may still be trapped and must also make sure that any bodies, if any, are not harmed by the machinery being utilised.

The police official also confirmed that the building belongs to a popular food products company. He also added that the people who are injured are being treated at the hospital for injuries. The relief and rescue operation also involved ten fire engines, ambulances, trucks, and earthmovers, he continued.

Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, described the occurrence as most unfortunate one and paid late-Saturday-night visits to the injured people receiving care at the IGM Hospital as well as the collapse site. According to Bhiwandi Deputy Commissioner of Police Navnath Dhavle, Indrapal Patil, the owner of the building, has been charged with violations under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. He is been detained for questioning in connection to the building collapse.

According to a civic official, the structure was roughly 10 years old and might not be able to support the weight of a mobile tower that had just been placed on top of it. According to CM Shinde, he has directed Thane Collector Ashok Shingare and other authorities to conduct an emergency examination of the buildings deemed to be the most dangerous in the district and relocate everybody residing there to a safer location before the arrival of monsoon.

The only way to deal with the issues brought on by unsafe buildings, according to Shinde, is to establish clusters of buildings over a vast area to provide people with a financial benefit of scale. Prem Ravikumar Mahato, 7, and Prince Ravikumar Mahato, 5, were two little brothers who lost their mother, Lalita Devi, 26, in the accident, and CM Shinde inquired after their health at the IGM Hospital. The kin of the deceased will receive compensation from the state government for Rs 5 lakh each, and the state will pay for the injured people’s medical costs.
