For the first time in 20 years, a Hindi language movie will be screened at theatre in Imphal on the occasion of Independence Day. According to the sources, Tribal organisation Hmar Students’ Association (HSA) has planned to screen a Hindi film at Rengkai (Lamka) in Churachandpur district on Tuesday evening. However, the name of the film has not been disclosed so far.

The statement from the group came on Monday when they said that they will make the screening in order to celebrate the country’s Independence Day.

According to Hmar Students’ Association, the last film that was publicly screened in Manipur was ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in 1998. After that the state government screened ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘Rocketry’ for limited audience in Imphal.

The reports claim that the ban on the screening of movies was done by the rebels who burnt almost 6,000 to 8,000 video and cassettes in September 2000. Though, the reason for the ban in the state is not clear. However, the cable operators in the state claims that the rebels do not want the people to get affected by Bollywood as it will ruin their culture and language.
