A mini truck, carrying a wedding party, has fallen into a river in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia district, resulting in at least 5 deaths and more than 30 injuries.

The tragedy occurred when a mini truck fell from an under-construction bridge into the river near Buhara village in Datia. The truck, carrying around 30 people, was part of a wedding procession, travelling from Gwalior to Tikamgarh.

While the police have confirmed 5 deaths, conflicting reports are surfacing about the mortality figure. The number of people who have died might be as high as 10, according to the Free Press Journal’s report. The three confirmed deaths include an 18-year-old boy, a 65-year-old woman, and three children. More children are reported to be missing.

A surviving family has claimed that one family member is still in the river, and rescue operations are underway.

Sanjay Kumar, District Collector Datia, said, “A mini truck carrying around 30 people fell into a river near Buhara village in the district in which five people died, and many others sustained injuries. These people were going to attend a wedding function in Jatara in Tikamgarh district from Bilheti village in Gwalior district.”

Madhya Pradesh truck was trying to cross makeshift bridge during accident

According to Sanjay Kumar, the mini truck was trying to cross an area where a bridge was under construction. A temporary culvert was installed to facilitate the flow of traffic, the truck was trying to cross that when it lost control and fell into the river.

The survivors have been sent to a hospital, and rescue missions are ongoing for the missing persons, confirmed Pradeep Sharma, SP Datia.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra told reporters that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken note of the incident, and investigations will take place on the matter. A financial assistance has been declared by the CM, to the sum of ₹4 lakh to the kins of the deceased and ₹50,000 each to those injured in the incident.
