The water level of the Yamuna River crossed its danger a couple of days ago, leading Delhi to a flood-like situation, especially in the northern and eastern regions of the city. The river level keeps getting rising day by day, now it has reached 208.09 metres, its previous record was 207.49 metres back in 1978. The Central Water Commission has said that the water flows into Yamuna will peak around 8-10 am on Thursday (July 13).

In an official statement, the Delhi government said, “At 8 PM, 1,47,857 Cusecs water released from Hathini Kund Barrage. As per the latest forecast issued by Central Water Commission (CWC) on 12.07.2023 at 05:10 PM, the water level at Old Railway Bridge (ORB) is expected to be at 207.99 Meters on 13.07.2023 between 04:00 AM to 06:00 AM & thereafter, it was likely to remain Stable,” read a statement from the Delhi government.”

MCD issues an advisory amid Yamuna rises

Taking note of the prevailing situation, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) issued an advisory for cremation grounds near the Yamuna River following the continuous downpours.

The MCD said that there is a possibility of water entering into the Nigam Bodh Ghat which can hamper cremation activities, and requested people not to use the cremation ground. Moreover, The civic body has advised people to use nearby cremation grounds instead.

“There is a possibility of water entering into the Nigam Bodh Ghat hampering the cremation-related activities. Therefore, the general public is advised to take the dead bodies of their near and dear to the nearby cremation grounds i.e. Panchkuyian Road, Sat Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Green Park, Dakshinpuri or preferably near their colony,” MCD said.

Further, the civic body said, “There is waterlogging at Geeta Colony crematorium due to the increasing water level of Yamuna. Citizens are requested to use cremation facilities at Karkarduma and Ghazipur cremation grounds, arrangements have been done. MCD is providing all the facilities at its cremation grounds for the convenience of the citizens.”  

CM Arvind Kejriwal’s letter to Amit Shah

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote a letter to Union Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday evening, requesting that a ‘limited quantity of water should be released by Yamnu from Hathini Kund barrage so that Yamuna’s level doesn’t rise any further.’

The chief minister also urged residents in low-lying areas near the river to move out. “We have to protect lives and properties. People in low-lying areas near the Yamuna River need to be evacuated,” he added.

On Wednesday morning, the river waters reached the Ring Road in North Delhi, causing waterlogging and traffic congestion.

In a warning, the Delhi Traffic Police said, “Traffic is affected on Ring road between Monastery and ISBT, Kashmere Gate due to overflowing Yamuna river water. Kindly avoid the stretch.”
