After 167 members voting in favour of the bill in the house of 294 members, West Bengal assembly on Thursday passed a resolution to observe Bengali New Years Day, also known as Polia Baisakh, as the states foundation day on April 15.The move has been taken after chief minister Mamata Banerjee asserted that the day will be observed as Bengal Day regardless of the approval of the states governor.WB assembly passes resolution by majority vote making Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year) on April 15 as Bengal Day— Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) September 7, 2023The move from Mamata Banerjee government came after the Centre has announced that June 20 be observed as West Bengal Foundation Day, earlier this year. However, Mamata Banerjee government instead preferred the first day of the Bengali New Year, which usually falls on April 14 or 15.
