Punjab Extends The Suspension Of The Internet Services Till March 21 Noon


According to the reports, in a major development in a crackdown by Punjab Police against the pro-khalistani group ‘Waris Punjab de’ chief Amritpal Singh’s uncle and driver surrendered before Punjab Police on Sunday night. This comes after efforts are underway to nab the chief of the group Amritpal Singh involved in the Ajnala incident in Amritsar. As per the details, they both surrendered in the Mehatpur Police station. They both reached in a Mercedes car on Sunday night, which the police have also seized.

Amritpal’s uncle Harjit Singh and driver Harpreet Singh surrendered near a gurdwara in the Mehatpur area in Jalandhar late Sunday night, Jalandhar Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Swarandeep Singh said. The pro-Khalistani preacher, whose cavalcade was stopped in the Jalandhar district, nevertheless managed to elude their dragnet.

The Punjab Police launched the operation on Saturday to nab the chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ Amritpal Singh and it is still on the run to nab him. Police have made 112 arrests in the case so far, as 34 were arrested on Sunday. The authorities have also suspended the mobile internet and SMS services in the territorial jurisdiction of Punjab till Monday noon, as per reports.

The legal advisor of Amritpal Singh, Imaan Singh Khara, has claimed that police have arrested that Punjab Police has arrested Amritpal Singh at Shahkot police station on Sunday. Khara also claims that the police want to kill him in the fake encounter. However, as per the statement by Punjab Police, he is still on the run and efforts are on to nab him. Citing the threat to Amritpal Singh’s life, Advocate Khara has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court that police cannot beat anyone without the procedure and consent of the court. 

Khara also alleged that despite their duty to present the person in the court within 24 hours, Punjab Police has not yet arrested Singh. According to a statement made by Jalandhar CP KS Chahal regarding the arrest of Amritpal Singh, the leader of the Waris Punjab De, the police pursued him for roughly 20 to 25 kilometres before he was able to elude capture on Sunday. Two automobiles and weapons have been seized. The hunt is still on. He also stated that law and order would be upheld and that we would apprehend him as quickly as possible.

Previously, the central agency sources claimed that they have also arrested Daljit Singh Kalsi alias Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi who is an alleged advisor and financer of Punjab. Police have also seized the vehicles which are used by Amritpal Singh, along with several other vehicles and ammunition.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up by the Punjab Police outside the residence of Amritpal Singh’s village house in Jallupur Khera. According to police, security has been enhanced across the state and several flag marches are also been conducted in the state to maintain law and order and confidence among the people.

On Saturday, Amritpal Singh has been declared fugitive by the Punjab Police. The police came into action after three weeks after they clashed with the uniformed personnel at the Ajnala police station in Amritsar last month, demanding the release of Lovepreet Toofan, one of the close aides of Amritpal Singh.

On February 23, thousands of Amritpal’s supporters gathered outside the Ajnala police station in Amritsar, flashing swords and firearms and threatened the police with the dire consequences of if they do not release Lovepreet Toofan, who was alleged arrested for abducting and assaulting a man.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the state government to respond to a habeas corpus petition on Tuesday, asserting that the preacher is already being held against his will by the police and should be freed.
