The “alarming” increase in crime in the nation’s capital, specially four murder cases in 24 hours of period, prompted Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal to write to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena. In the letter to LG, CM Kejriwal suggested that the Delhi Cabinet meeting should happen on a priority basis.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in the letter has urged the LG, to take “urgent effective steps to restore the confidence of residents about the security and safety of their lives, since such serious crimes have shaken Delhi” about the four murders that had occurred in Delhi in the previous 24 hours.

In the letter, CM Kejriwal also assured of all possible cooperation to ensure the law rules in Delhi.

Focusing on the cited statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, which were made public last year, claiming that they ought to have opened the eyes of the Lieutenant Governor and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), “both of whom are directly responsible for maintenance of law and order here, but regrettably, that did not happen,” Kejriwal said.

According to the NCRB report, data out of total crimes against women that took place in 19 metropolitan cities in India, Delhi alone accounted for 32.20% of the total crimes.

“Given such alarming figures, urgent preventive steps on crimes against women were required, but unfortunately, for the reasons best known to the MHA and your good self, nothing changed on the ground,” he further wrote.

Delhi Chief Minister said that because there aren’t enough Delhi Police officers on the ground, homeowners are being compelled to hire private guards “in large numbers” to protect their lives and property.

The “need of the hour,” according to the letter, is for efficient police patrols, particularly at night, and immediate consultation with Delhi residents on how to strengthen law and order in the city.

Arvind Kejriwal suggested that the LG and members of his cabinet meet to have a serious conversation about the matter.
