Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate Shelly Oberoi is elected as Delhi Mayor today. She has won after securing 150 votes in her favour, defeating BJP’s Rekha Gupta by 34 votes. BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi and Hans Raj Hans were among the first to cast their votes.

As soon as Shelly Oberoi got elected for the Delhi Mayor, she said, “I assure you that I will run this house in a constitutional manner. I expect you all will maintain the dignity of the house and cooperate in smooth functioning.”

She said that she will be working towards fixing problems that the BJP could not resolve during its rule. “Our aim is to make Delhi better together with everyone. We will soon work by preparing a blueprint for cleaning the capital; we will start by clearing the mountains of garbage.”

The voting was started at around 11:30 am and went on for more than two hours. A total of 10 nominated MPs, 14 nominated MLAs and 241 elected councillors out of 250 voted in the mayoral election.

On February 18, Lieutenant-Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena approved the AAP’s recommendation to hold the Delhi mayoral elections on February 22.

Addressing the MCD House for the first time, Shelly Oberoi thanked Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, and the Lieutenant Governor. She said that she would follow the rules of the DMC Act and will run the MCD as per the rules and regulations. “We will all work together to fulfil the dreams of the people of Delhi,” she added.

After the results were declared, Oberoi took over from the presiding officer, BJP’s Satya Sharma, and will now preside over the elections for deputy mayor and six members of the Standing Committee.

Congratulating Shelly Oberoi on her win, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said, “The people of Delhi won and hooliganism has been defeated” in his tweet.

After multiple postponements due to ruckus in the house following differences between AAP and BJP members, the mayor election was done today. The house was earlier summoned thrice i.e. Jauary6, January 25 and February 6.

The LG’s decision stated, “As proposed by the Chief Minister, GNCTD, I approve the proposal to call the adjourned first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on February 22, 2023, at 11 am for the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and six members of the Standing Committee.”

This came after the Supreme Court bench led by the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud ruled that the election of the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi shall be conducted first and nominated persons have no right to vote in the same.

According to the law, the election of the mayor should be done within a month after the conclusion of civic polls, according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957. However, the election has been stalled thrice over the dispute on the voting rights of nominated members.

The BJP’s 15-year rule over the civic body was ended by the AAP, which won 134 wards in the MCD elections on December 4. The Congress gained nine seats in the 250-member municipal House, while the BJP won 104 wards to come in second place.
