A tragic incident happened in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district, when a tourist bus fell while turning a sharp bend near Coonoor, killing at least 9 people and several others were left injured. There were nearly 60 passengers abroad on the bus, who were on their way to Tenkasi.

The bus fell into a gorge after the driver of the vehicle lost control on a hairpin bend. After this, the locals, police and firefighters immediately rushed to the spot of the incident and initiated the rescue operation. 

According to the police, the bus toppled in the impact and the rescue workers were seen using ropes to get down to the bus and reach out to the trapped passengers.

Earlier, DIG Coimbatore Zone Saravana Sundar said, “Around eight people died, while a few were seriously injured. Further investigation is underway”.

The police said that among the deceased were four women and a minor boy. The victims of the accident were from Kadayam in Tenkasi district and were on their way home.

The injured passengers have been taken to the Coonoor government hospital for treatment and rescue operation is still on. 

CM MK Stalin announces ex-gratia

Taking notes from the tragic incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has expressed his anguish over the deaths of the passengers. Further, he also announced ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased. Expressing concern over the accident, he also expressed his sympathies with the kin of the victims.

A  relief of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs one lakh to those under treatment with grievous injuries was announced by the chief minister.

In a statement, he said ₹50,000 would be provided to those who had suffered minor injuries. He directed special treatment for the injured.

CM Stalin also said that he has deputed Tourism Minister K Ramachandran to oversee the rescue and relief work.

BJP State President K Annamalai took to X, (formerly known as Twitter) and requested the Tamil Nadu government to provide high-quality treatment to those injured. ”
