Update (August 26, 1:04 pm): The chief minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin has expressed grief on the train incident happened on Saturday near Madurai Railway station. The incident has claimed nine lives. To support the affected families, ex-gratia of ₹3 lakh has been announced.

In addition to this, the officials have been directed to ensure that injured gets the best treatment. Here’s what his tweet reads:


At least nine people have lost their lives and more than 20 have been injured after fire broke out in a tourist train parked in Bodi Lane near Madurai railway station in Tamil Nadu.

According to the officials, fire broke out in the wee hours on Saturday. The train was reported to be Punalur-Madurai Express. Soon after getting the information the fire services reached the spot and put off the fire and no damage have been caused to other coaches, as per reports.

As per statement of Southern Railway officials, some passengers allegedly smuggled gas cylinder that caused the fire.
