80-year-old UP man gets life imprisonment for 49-year-old murder case

A crime committed almost half a century ago proved heavy for an 80-year-old UP man, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Firozabad court on Friday.

The elderly accused has been charged in a murder case dating back to 1974. The court also imposed a fine of ₹ 20,000 on the convict Mahendra Singh.

According to the additional district government counsel Narayan Saxena, a case was filed by Meera Devi, a resident of the district on September 14, 1974, accusing Mahendra Singh of shooting her mother dead.

Saxena also said that the Additional District and Sessions Judge Jitendra Gupta had sentenced Mahendra to life imprisonment on Thursday while adding that in case of non-payment of the fine, the convict will have to spend an additional year in jail.

When this case was filed in 1964, Narkhi was still a part of the Agra district however it later got transferred to Firozabad. As such the case was also later transferred to the Firozabad court.
