Around 10 pm on Sunday, near Dhaun, some 20 kilometres from the administrative centre of Uttarakhand‘s Champawat district, a bus carrying pilgrims from Punjab that had just left Reetha Sahib Gurudwara after they had offered prayers to the Gurudwara went turtle, injuring at least 50 of them.

According to police superintendent Devendra Pincha, a rescue effort was started right afterwards, and the injured were taken straight to a hospital. Out of the 61 pilgrims aboard the bus, seven had severe injuries and were sent to a hospital in Haldwani after receiving first assistance, reportedly all of them are stable. Whereas, 18 were injured to the district hospital for treatment, while the others were discharged after receiving less serious injuries.

The Champawat district office in Ladhiya Valley is around 80 kilometres from Reeth Sahib Gurudwara. The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, and his disciple Mardana are thought to have travelled to Reetha Sahib in 1501 to engage in discussions with local sages. The gurdwara is frequently visited by pilgrims from all over the country and overseas to participate in a three-day event organised in June.
