Multiple deaths occurred in a government hospital in Nanded district of Maharashtra. At least 24 people died in 24 hours at Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital, including 12 newborn babies, on Monday. According to the authorities of the hospital, the 12 children died due to a shortage of medicines while the other 12 adults died due to various ailments including snake bites.

Maharashtra government authorities give details

Dr Shyamrao Wakode of Govt Medical College Nanded said, “Around 12 children died in the last 24 hours…12 adults also died due to various ailments (snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning etc.). Due to transfers of various staff, there was some difficulty for us…We were supposed to buy medicines from the Haffkine Institute but that also didn’t happen….Also, patients come from far off to this hospital and there were many patients whose sanctioned budget also got disturbed…”

“In the last 24 hours, 24 deaths have been reported at Nanded Government Hospital and Medical College (GMCH). Out of these, 12 are infants who were referred here by some local private hospitals. The remaining deaths are of adults for various reasons,” Dr Dilip Mhaisekar, Director, Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra, told PTI, adding that a three-member expert committee from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) district has been formed with a mandate to submit a report by 1 pm on Tuesday

Former Maharashtra CM speaks

Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan called this incident ‘concerning’ and said that all necessary help and resources should be given.

Congress leader Ashok Chavan visited the hospital where the deaths occurred. “Around 24 people’s death has been reported at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital & therefore I have come here and met the Dean. The situation is concerning & serious”, Chavan was quoted by ANI as saying.

The Congress leader also said that around 70 patients in the hospital are critical.

Opposition criticizes BJP

The opposition has taken social media by storm as they criticize the BJP for irresponsible spending of money saying that all the ruling government does is spend money on publicity rather than on medicines for children.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to ‘X’ where he wrote “The BJP government spends thousands of crores of rupees on its publicity, but there is no money for medicines for children? In the eyes of BJP, the lives of the poor have no value,” while also giving his condolences for the deaths.

Taking a dig at the state government for advertising festivals and events, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Vikas Lawande wrote in an ‘X’ post “24 deaths including 12 newborn babies in 24 hours in government hospital in Nanded not only due to lack of supply of medicine by state government. Woe betide the government that advertises festivals and events.”

Priyanka Chaturvedi, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP called these deaths as murder due to the negligence of the state government in her X post. She wrote “This is shameful, please don’t call them deaths, this is murder due to absolute negligence on the part of the unconstitutional state government. They are so busy planning influencer events or foreign trips that they have forgotten their basic job is to serve the state.”

NCP working president Supriya Sule also wrote on ‘X’ about the tragic deaths and called for the resignation of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. She wrote “24 patients died in Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded within 24 hours. This is a very serious matter, and in this matter the Chief Minister should immediately accept the resignation of the concerned Minister.”

Two months ago, a similar incident took place that claimed the lives of 18 people in 24 hours at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa in Thane. These included 10 women and 8 men. twelve of the deceased were aged above 50, according to media reports.
