There are more than 20,000 vehicles in the national capital that face over 100 challans each, but their owners have not bothered to pay the fines yet. Yes! In a report by Delhi traffic police, approximately 20,684 such vehicles in Delhi against which a hundred or more challans have been issued. Apart from it, over 1.65 lakh vehicles have 20 or more unpaid challans against them.

What’s more concerning is that these fines are not for minor traffic violations, but for major ones like negligent driving, rash driving, jumping the red light, improper lane change and whatnot.

Traffic police issue plea to Delhi and other state governments

Taking notes from the situation, the traffic police has now written its concern to the Delhi government and other state governments, seeking a suspension of the driving licence of the owners who commits these violations. The police said that many of these vehicles are registered in other states.

Till June 30, over 58 lakh vehicles in the national capital face a total of 2.6 crore challans. Out of them, 2.2 crore challans are still pending, the traffic police said. Nearly 1.65 lakh vehicles account for over 67 lakh challans.

These challans were issued mainly during the spot checking by traffic personnel and those captured by traffic cameras.

In 2022, Delhi recorded 14 lakh traffic violations, still, it was a drop from the 18 lakh violations reported in 2021. This year, the city has reported 6.3 lakh traffic violations till June 30.
