The order from the top court on September 1 came as a set-back for the former RJD leader Prabhunath Singh who was acquitted in the murder case. According to the sources, Supreme Court has sentenced former leader life imprisonment in a 1995 double murder case.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul had found him guilty under section 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) while overturning the orders of the trial court and the Patna High Court acquitting him in the case.

After hearing submissions on the quantum of sentence, the bench awarded life term to the ex-leader. Apart from this, the apex court have further directed the government to provide ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh to the family of kins and ₹5 lakh to the injured.

Notably, Singh was acquitted for opening fire on the victims when they claimed that they had voted for the Janata Dal. The former MP was then contesting as a candidate of the Bihar People’s Party.
