Excavation work for a new house in Vyaspura village of Jalaun Kotwali, India, has led to the unexpected discovery of ancient silver coins and bracelets buried underground. The coins are believed to be around 150 years old and date back to 1862. The farmer, Kamlesh Kushwaha, who owns the house, was having it constructed using funds received from Prime Minister Awas Yojana.Discovery of the CoinsDuring the excavation, a labourer on the project discovered a heavy foil buried in the soil. Upon opening it, they discovered several silver coins, bracelets, and utensils. Mr. Kushwaha was called to the spot and subsequently informed the police. The police, administration officials, the Archaeological Department, and the Forensic Team arrived at the scene to recover the coins and bracelets. They found 279 silver coins and 4 silver bracelets at the excavation site.Police Intervention and Depositing of the CoinsAs news of the discovery spread, many locals arrived at the site. The police force was also deployed to ensure the safety of the site and the artefacts. Deputy District Officer of Orai, Rajesh Singh, was informed of the discovery and arrived at the site with the police team. They found that the house under construction was the source of the coins. After counting the coins, they deposited them in the treasury.Details of the CoinsDeputy Collector Rajesh Kumar Singh has reported that the coins discovered date back to 1810, 1846, and 1862 and bear the impressions of Queen Victoria and Williams. The Archaeological Department will receive a detailed report on the discovery after it has been prepared. Of the coins found, 279 are silver, and two are copper.
