Wrestlers' Protest: In response to the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) by the Union Sports Ministry and the subsequent formation of an ad-hoc committee by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), newly elected WFI President Sanjay Singh declared his intention to engage in discussions with the government before considering legal options.
The Union Sports Ministry suspended the WFI, including all its office-bearers, prompting the IOA to establish an ad-hoc committee to oversee the daily operations of the federation. Bhupinder Singh Bajwa was appointed chairman of the committee, assisted by MM Somaya and Manjusha Kanwar.
Sanjay Singh, who secured victory in the WFI elections with 40 out of 47 votes, expressed discontent with the ad-hoc committee formation. He asserted his commitment to engaging in discussions with the government but insisted on seeking legal advice if the talks failed to yield a resolution. Singh emphasised the democratic nature of his election, garnering support from 40 out of 47 state federations.
The wrestling landscape in India witnessed a significant shift following Sanjay Singh's election as the new WFI president. His victory led to emotional scenes, with wrestler Sakshi Malik announcing her retirement. However, the Union Sports Ministry's subsequent suspension added complexity to the situation.
In the midst of the turmoil, renowned wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her decision to return the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award. This move followed in the footsteps of Bajrang Punia, who returned his Padma Shri award. The developments underscore the intense emotions and divisions within the wrestling community amid the WFI's suspension.
