Wrestlers' Protest: Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh distanced himself from wrestling following the suspension of the newly elected committee by the Union Sports Ministry.
The suspension followed WFI President Sanjay Singh's announcement of hosting U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, triggering controversy and subsequent government action.
Reacting to the suspension, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh emphasised that the elections were conducted democratically under Supreme Court guidance, highlighting the committee's autonomy in deciding its course of action.
Addressing allegations, Brij Bhushan denied any familial connection with Sanjay Singh and clarified the intent behind hosting the competition at Nandini Nagar. He declared retirement from wrestling, affirming that decisions and talks with the government are now in the hands of the newly elected federation members.
While Sanjay Singh refrained from commenting on the suspension details, citing a lack of information due to his flight, the Sports Ministry criticised WFI's decisions as a "complete disregard for the sports code."
The Sports Ministry alleged a violation of established legal and procedural norms by the newly elected WFI executive body, accusing them of being influenced by former office bearers and disregarding the Sports Code.
Brij Bhushan expressed gratitude for the victory of Sanjay Singh in the WFI elections, attributing it to the wrestlers of the country. He credited the government for facilitating the elections, bringing an end to the 11-month wrestling hiatus.
An hour after the WFI elections, Olympic medallist Sakshee Malikkh announced her retirement from wrestling, adding an emotional twist to the unfolding events.
The suspension of the newly elected WFI committee brought chaos, prompting Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to retire from wrestling, while controversies continue to surround the sport's governance in India.
