World Cup 2023: Wasim Akram furious after Pakistan’s loss to Afghanistan, raises questions on players' fitness

Afghanistan has been creating headlines as it secured an eight-wicket win against Pakistan in the ICC World Cup match yesterday at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Following Pakistan’s humiliating loss, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram lashed out at Babar Azam's team saying the fitness levels of the players left a lot to be desired.

Pakistan has lost three successive matches in this ODI World Cup and lost to lower-ranked Pakistan for the first time 8th meeting between the two sides in ODI Cricket.

Wasim Akram on Pakistan’s defeat

Wasim Akram called Pakistan’s defeat against Afghanistan ‘embarrassing’. "It's embarrassing. Just 2 wickets, 280-290 is a big score. The pitch is wet or not wet” Akram said

Calling out the lack of fitness among the players Wasim said “Look at their fitness levels, we have constantly been raising our voices for the past three weeks that there has been no fitness test of our players in the last two years.”

He also commented on the heavy diet of the Pakistani player saying that they are “having 8-8 kilos of karahi and nihari every day”.

“Professionally you guys are getting paid, playing for your country and there has to be a certain criteria,” he added.

The former Pakistan cricket captain also drew a conncetion between fielding and bowling and said “Fielding is all about fitness and that’s where we are lacking.”

Following their shocking and historic win against defending champions England on 15 October, the team has been creating major upsets this World Cup. After its win against Pakistan yesterday, October 23, the team promotes a hopeful game in the ongoing World Cup campaign.

Both Pakistan and Afghanistan have won 2 matches out of the five total matches it has played in this World Cup. In the upcoming matches, Pakistan will play against third-ranking South Africa on October 27 while Afghanistan will face Sri Lanka on October 30.
