Earlier in the play, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first which proved to be a wrong decision by the Proteas’ aggressive gameplay. South Africa opener Quinton de Kock smashed a ton in 84 deliveries before number three batter Rassie van der Dussen followed up with his maiden World Cup century which came in 110 deliveries. Their innings were complemented by Aiden Markam’s brisk hundred.

Aiden Markram got to his hundred in just 49 balls, which is now the fastest ODI World Cup hundred, breaking Kevin O’Brien’s record of 50 balls from 2011 against England.

Fastest ODI hundreds in World Cups

50 – Kevin O’Brien vs England, Bengaluru in 2011
51 – Glenn Maxwell vs Sri Lanka, Sydney in 2015
52 – AB de Villiers vs West Indies, Sydney in 2015

This was also the first time in a World Cup match where 3 batters from a team scored tons in an innings. It is only the 4th instance in ODI cricket history.

Earlier, South Africa held the record of being the only team to have struck three hundred in an ODI innings, achieving this feat twice in 2015 against mighty teams, West Indies and India.

Meanwhile, England is the only other team to have recorded three hundreds in an innings, against the Netherlands in 2022, where England also achieved its highest ever ODI score of 498/4.
