The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that right-handed opener Shubman Gill will not travel with the squad and stay in Chennai. The confirmation came through an official statement that was released on Monday.

This is a big setback for India as ‘Men in Blue’ will lock horns with Afghanistan in Delhi in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The BCCI released an official statement to clarify Shubman Gill’s absence from the next game as he will be under the supervision of the medical team’s supervision in Chennai.

The BCCI said in a statement, “Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team”.

Earlier in the day, as per the reports, Shubman Gill was likely to travel with the Indian contingent but is set to miss the match against Afghanistan in Delhi.

In Shubman Gill’s absence, left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan opened with Rohit Sharma in the World Cup campaign opener against Australia. However, both of the openers failed to open their account and were dismissed for a duck.

Playing XI vs Afghanistan

India will likely stick to the same squad as the previous one against Australia. India will be up against Afghanistan in their second World Cup clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday.

India opened their campaign with a 6-wicket victory against the Aussie on Sunday. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli came to the rescue after the top order collapsed in the game against Australia.
