Star batter Shubham Gill is down with dengue fever as the Indian team prepares for its World Cup 2023 opening against Australia, as per media reports. With Gill affected with the mosquito disease, the star player is likely to skip the match on Sunday.
Gill is said to have been suffering from a high fever since he landed in Chennai, a BCCI source privy to team developments told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
If Gill sits out the first match, as appears likely, it would deal a telling blow to India’s chances of opening their World Cup campaign with a win. The lanky opener had hit a purple patch in recent 50-over internationals that he played for the country and his absence could seriously impact the hosts’ prospects against the mighty Aussies in their World Cup opener.
According to media reports, in the absence of Gill in the opening match, Ishan Kishan could be in line to open the tournament for India.
