New Zealand continued the winning run in the ongoing World Cup with a thumping 8-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Friday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

In the eleventh game of ICC World Cup 2023, the Kiwis showcased a clinical performance with the ball restricting Bangladesh to 245 in 50 overs.

Youngster Rachin Ravindra failed to impress in the match with the bat as the ball found an outside edge in Mustafizur’s over to dismissing him in the third over of the play.

Williamson returns at No. 3

Bangladesh’s skipper Shakib Al Hasan provided the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Devon Conway, who scored 45 runs. This wicket proved to be the last wicket of the night as Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell took apart Bangladesh bowlers.

Williamson injures left thumb

However, Williamson sustained a blow on his left thumb in the 38th over Taskin Ahmed’s over. After discomfort, he retired hurt with a score of 78. Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell sealed the game for New Zealand.

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat first in the multinational event. Bangladeshi wicketkeeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim was the top scorer for his side, scoring 66 runs off 75 deliveries packed with six fours and two sixes, skipper Shakib Al Hasan scored a handy knock of 40 runs including three fours and two sixes.

Early breakthroughs for New Zealand

Trent Boult started the proceedings, striking on the very first ball of the innings dismissing Bangaldesh’s explosive batter Litton Das, who tried to wip the ball from the leg stump and caught on the square leg side by Litton Das.

Bangladesh slips the ground quite easily after the Kiwi speedster Lockie Ferguson dismisses Tanzid Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz cheaply. Although Mehidy Hasan Miraz failed to convert into big innings despite getting a good start. He was dismissed after scoring 30 runs off 46 deliveries. Mahmudullah at the back end played the crucial knock of unbeaten 41 runs which lifted Bangladesh’s total to 254 runs.
