India is set to play its opening World Cup match against Australia on Sunday, but the host team has run into a problem as star batter Shubham Gill is allegedly down with dengue. With a little more than 24 hours left for the match, the head coach does not want to throw in the towel yet.

In the event Gill sits out of the match, Ishan Kishan is likely to open the innings, as per media sources.

“He is feeling better today. The medical team is monitoring him, and he is doing better,” Dravid said during a press conference on Friday.

“He is not technically out for the first game. The medical team is monitoring him and (we) will take the decision after tomorrow,” he said.

BCCI on Shubham Gill’s sickness

The BCCI has yet to confirm the nature of his illness however, an inside source from BBCI had to say another story.

“Gill is not well and he is in no position to play at least the first two games (of the WC),” a BCCI source privy to the developments told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, the BCCI had said they were waiting for updates on Gill.

“He’s under the weather, the medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hoping he gets better soon. We will have to wait on more updates from the medical team,” the medical update from BCCI stated.

Star cricketer Shubham Gill

Shunham Gill is one of the most prolific cricketers in recent times and his performance in the latest ODI matches has left a huge impact on the cricket world.

If the star batter is confirmed for dengue then he might not only sit out for the opening against Australia but the upcoming match against Afghanistan (Oct 11) and Pakistan (Oct 14)b as well.

This is because recovery from dengue normally takes 7-10 days for a player to be match-fit again. However, if there is a significant drop in the platelet count, his recuperation could take much more time.

If Gill is absent from the Indian team for a long time, it could be a big setback for the Indian team.
