After a dominating display of play with the ball, ‘Men in Blue’ added an unfortunate record to their account. India registered its second-lowest score in the Powerplay in the ICC World Cup during its encounter against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
The Indian side ended the first 10 overs at 27 runs for the loss of three wickets in its campaign opener clash. Previously, the lowest-ever score in Powerplay was 24/4 against New Zealand in the semifinal of the World Cup 2019 in England.

Earlier, Australia managed to post 199 runs with Steven Smith scoring 46 and David Warner 41. India lost openers Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer for ducks. Mitchell Starc picked Ishan Kishan’s wicket before Josh Hazlewood removed skipper Rohit and Iyer to leave India three-down for just two runs in the first of the innings.
Virat Kohli with KL Rahul started to rebuild the innings after the collapse in the top order. Virat was dropped on 12 by Mitchell Marsh off Hazlewood’s ball. India recorded 43 dot balls in the first powerplay and could find the boundary only twice.
