In the ongoing clash between India and England at ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the defending champions bowled clinically, restricting India to a below-par total of 229/9 in 50 overs at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

England's skipper Jos Butler won the toss and invited India to bat first in the twenty-ninth game of the multi national event. Indian batters failed to continue domination in the ICC's top event despite a brilliant knock from skipper Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill was the first batter to be dismissed by Chris Woakes in the first powerplay after scoring 9 runs off 13 deliveries. England bowled tight lines and lengths in the powerplay making the batters difficult to score runs. Virat Kohli was praised in the process of scoring a fancy shot to get off the mark as he was dismissed by David Willey for a nine-wicket duck. This is his first duck this year in ODI cricket and first ever in the World Cup. India were 27/2 in 6.5 overs.

England continued their brilliant bowling performance dismissed Shreyas Iyer soon thereafter bringing KL Rahul into the middle to continue the battle with skipper Rohit Sharma. India was 40/3 in 11.5 overs. The batting duo took the innings further and added 91 runs for the fourth wicket in 111 deliveries before KL Rahul played a fancy shot and got dismissed by David Willey after scoring 39 runs off 58 deliveries including three boundaries.

Rohit's brilliant knock

Rohit continued the innings with Suyakumar Yadav adding 33 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Rohit fell 13 runs shot off his century as he handed a simple catch to a deep mid-wicket fielder off Adil Rashid's ball. He scored 87 runs including ten boundaries and three maximums. Adil gave a second blow by dismissing Ravindra Jadeja for a mere 8 runs while Mark Wood scalped Mohammed Shami's wicket.

Suryakumar Yadav was the second leading run-scorer of the Indian innings. He fell short of a run from completing his half-century and was dismissed after scoing 49 runs off 47 deliveries including 4 boundaries and a maximum. After SKY's departure, Jasprit Bumrah played some run-scoring shots to keep the Indian innings up and running by adding 21 runs with Kuldeep Yadav for 9th wicket partnership. Bumrah (16) was runout on the last ball of the innings.

David Willey was the pick of bowlers from the English side, who scalped three wickets. While Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid scalped two wickets each. Mark Wood claimed Mohammed Shami's wicket.

Brief Scorecard:

India: 229/9 in 50 Overs (Rohit Sharma 87, Suryakumar Yadav 49, KL Rahul 39; David Willey 45/3) vs England
