India's star opener Shubman Gill was in sublime touch against New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium. 'Men in Blue' faced a big setback in the game as Gill had to leave the ground due to the cramps.

Excess heat in Mumbai

What we understand is that excess heat in Mumbai could be the root cause that forced him to 'retire hurt'.   He was on 79* off 65 balls when he had to retire hurt. It is expected that he will come out to bat again if the situation escalates. Shreyas Iyer joined in the middle in the 22nd over after Gill left the ground. India was 164/1 in 22.4 overs.

Earlier in the innings, India's openers provided the launchpad to score big against the arch-nemesis New Zealand in Mumbai. Rohit Sharma played a blazing knock of 47 off 29 deliveries including 4 boundaries and 4 maximums. India hammered 84 runs in the first mandatory powerplay.
