In the ongoing clash between India and England in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the defending champions injected quick wickets to bring 'Men in Blue' in trouble in the first innings at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Shubman Gill was the first batter to be dismissed by Chris Woakes in the first powerplay after scoring 9 runs off 13 deliveries. England bowled tight lines and lengths in the powerplay making the batters difficult to score runs. Virat Kohli was praised in the process of scoring a fancy shot to get off the mark as he was dismissed by David Willey for a nine-wicket duck, his first duck this year in ODI cricket and first ever in the World Cup. India were 27/2 in 6.5 overs.

England continued their brilliant bowling performance dismissing Shreyas Iyer soon thereafter bringing KL Rahul into the middle to continue the battle with skipper Rohit Sharma. India was 40/3 in 11.5 overs. India scored 73 runs after losing three wickets in 20 overs. Rohit Sharma is batting on 44 runs off 56 deliveries while KL Rahul is on 16 runs off 26 deliveries.
