India has eliminated the mere chances of England to qualify into the semis of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Sunday. India handed a 100-run defeat to the defending champions at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium at Lucknow. This win also made India, the first country to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing multinational event.

India posted the target of 230 runs helped by the dazzling knock from skipper Rohit Sharma, who scored 87 runs. Chasing the target England started well as the openers looked aggrevise and scored four boundaries and a maximum in the first four overs. Indian ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah injected the first blow by dismissing David Malan, who chopped onto his stumps. He scored 16 runs off 17 deliveries.

Bumrah dismissed Joe Root on the very next ball and sent him for a golden duck triggering a collapse in the batting order of England. Mohammed Shami rubbed salt in the wounds by dismissing twice in the powerplay. Shami dismissed the stalwart allrounder Ben Stokes, who went to a ball duck followed by the dismissal of Jhonny Bairstow, who scored 14 runs off 23 deliveries. England was reduced to 40/4 in 10 overs.

England's batting collapse

India struck wickets at regular intervals and didn't let the defending champions settle down. Kuldeep Yadav sent Jos Buttler back to the pavilion with a jaffa, who scored 10 runs off 23 deliveries. Half of the side went back into the pavilion in just 15.1 overs. Liam Livingstone was the only batter who managed to play above 25 balls and scored 27 runs off 46 deliveries before getting dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. Ravindra Jadeja got the wicket of Chris Woakes, who scored 16 runs off 17 deliveries. England was bundled out for 129 in 34.5 overs.
