World Cup 2023: Fog interruption halts IND vs NZ clash in Dharamsala

In an unexpected turn of events, the World Cup 2023 encounter between India and New Zealand in Dharamsala came to a temporary halt due to a thick fog that engulfed the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. India was chasing New Zealand's target of 274 runs, reaching 100/2 in 15.2 overs in the highly anticipated match when the fog severely impacted visibility.

Uncommon halt in play

Previous interruptions in cricket matches have often been attributed to rain, intruders, animal invasions, or even excessive sun, making the fog disruption a unique occurrence in the world of cricket.

The first signs of the impending interruption became evident during the 15th over when the HPCA Stadium which is situated at an altitude of 1457 meters above sea level.

As visibility continued to deteriorate, the umpires decided to intervene and assess the situation. Players on both sides, including Indian batsmen Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli, appeared baffled. Initially, the fog caused a momentary inconvenience, and play carried on.

However, in the following over, the fog's intensity increased to an extent that even commentators struggled to view the on-field action. Concerns were raised by New Zealand players, prompting Umpries to halt the play. 

After a delay of around fifteen minutes, the fog gradually reduced, allowing play to resume without any reduction in overs or amended targets.
