World Cup 2023 - ENG vs SL: Sri Lanka takes control as England posts 156 runs

In the ongoing clash between England and Sri Lanka in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, England was bundled out at 156 runs in 33.2 overs at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.


England won the toss and opted to bat first which proved to wrong decision as Sri Lanka showcased execpataional bowling in the fifth match of the ongoing multi-national event. England opening pair Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan gave a brisk start by adding 45 runs for the first wicket. Ben Stokes scored the highest for England at 43 off 73 deliveries while Lahiru Kumara was the peak of the bowlers from Sri Lanka, who 3 three wickets. Angelo Mathews provided the first breakthrough of the innings by dismissing David Malan, who scored 28 runs including six boundaries. England scored 59 runs in the mandatory first powerplay. 

After the dismissal of Bairstow, England's innings felled like a deck of cards as Sri Lanka kept scalping wickets at regular intervals. Kasun Rajitha gave England a big blow as he dismissed set batter Bairstow for 30.

Mathews bagged his second wicket of the match as he scalped Moeen Ali in the 25th over of the game. Ben Stokes slammed a few boundaries to ease pressure from his team however Stokes left in the 31st over after being dismissed by Lahiru Kumara, letting England's ship sink in further.
