Bangladesh has struck down Sri Lanka's chance to qualify for semis in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Monday. In a game full of drama at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Bangladesh chased down the target of 280 with the help of dazzling knocks from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan, who scored respective fifties.

In the pursuit of 280 runs Bangladesh was rocked back by the double blows from Dilshan Madushanka who dismissed the openers, Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das. Shakib Al Hasan combined with Najmul Hossain Shanto added 169 runs off just 149 deliveries, securing the victory for Bengal Tigers.

High-voltage drama

A drama was unleashed when the Bangladeshi skipper was dismissed by Angelo Mathews, who was adjudged out due to time-out laws. Speactors called it Karma. Notably, Angelo Mathews became the victim of the 'time out' as he was found out of the crease even after staying in the fields for 2 minutes. The veteran player argued that he was asking to replace the heal mate, however, he had to leave the field as the umpires gave a decision in Bangladesh's favor.

Sri Lankan bowlers tried their best to make a comeback in the dead rubber match by dismissing Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz in quick succession. However, handy contributions from Bangladesh's batter ended their chance in New Delhi. Towhid Hridoy and Tanzim Hasan Sakib secured a 3-wicket victory for their side, leaving 53 balls to spare.

Asalanka brilliant ton

Earlier in the innings, Bangladesh's skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and invited the Lankans to bat first in the 38th encounter of the ongoing tournament. Sri Lanka posted 279 in 49.3 overs, helped by the brilliant ton form inform batter Charith Asalanka. The batting allrounder hammered 108 runs off 105 deliveries including 6 boundaries and 5 maximums. Pathum Nissanka and Samarawickrama scored 41 runs each.
