In the ongoing 13th game of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 between England and Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave Afghanistan a perfect start propelling the team’s total to 284 runs at Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi on Sunday.

Blitzing knock from Gurbaz

England’s skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and invited Afghanistan to bat first. The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zardan started the procedure in a position manner and smashed 76 runs in powerplay which is their highest powerplay totals in World Cups. While Gurbaz slammed a 33-ball 50 as Afghanistan. He along with Ibrahim Zadran added 114 runs for the first wicket.

The defending champions England failed to scalp any wicket in the powerplay. Adil Rashid provided the first breakthrough for England after dismissing Ibrahim, who scored 28 runs in 48 balls.

Following this England scalped four quick blows dismissing Zadran (28) in the 17th over, falling to Adil Rashid. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was run out in the 19th over, for 80 runs off 57 balls. While Rahman Shah (3) and Azmatullah Omarzai (19) fell to Rashid and Liam Livingstone.

Fifty by wicketkeeper Ikram Alikhli

After the dismissal of Gurbaz, wicketkeeper batsmen Ikram Alikhli held one end while the wickets fell quickly from the other end. He scored 58 runs off 66 balls including 3 boundaries and 2 maximums before getting dismissed by Reece Topley.

Late fire works by Rashid and Mujeeb

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi then fell for 14(36) and Mark Wood removed Mohammad Nabi for 9(15). Rashid Khan and Ikram Alikhil then stabilised things before Rashid fell for 23(22). Mujeeb Ur Rahman played a handy knock of 28 runs in just 13 balls before getting dismissed by Mark Wood. The last batter to be dismissed was Naveen-ul-Haq. Afghanistan finished with 284 runs on the board in 49.5 overs.

Adil scalps three wickets

Adil Rashid was the top wicket-taker from the English side scalping three wickets, while speedster Mark Wood scalped 2 wickets. Reece Topley, Joe Root, and Liam Livingstone claimed one wicket each.
