The sixth-seeded pair of India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden on Tuesday reached the quarterfinals of the men’s double event at the ongoing Wimbledon championships in London.

The Bopanna-Ebden duo secured a hard-fought victory against David Pel of the Netherlands and Reese Stalder of the USA in their Round of 16 match.

In the match played on the grass court of All England Lawn Tennis Club, the sixth-seeded Indo-Aussie pair beat the unseeded Pel and Stalder by 7-5, 4-6, 7(10)-6(5) in a thrilling encounter that lasted two hours and 19 minutes.

Bopanna and Ebden survive scare to win Wimbledon R16 match

The duo of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, ranked 12 and 16 in the ATP men’s double rankings respectively, were heavy favourites against their unseeded opponents Pel (rank 86) and Stalder (rank 80). The favourites showed their experience and disciple in the first set, winning a late break in the 11th game.

The red-hot form continued in the second set until Pel and Stalder broke Bopanna’s serve in the 10th game and won the set.

The start of the deciding third set was delayed by more than an hour due to rain, setting up a nervous end to the game. However, once play resumed, Bopanna and Ebden saved three match points to take the contest to a ten-point tiebreaker.

The tiebreaker started on the wrong foot as Pel and Stalder led 3-1, but Bopanna and Ebden won seven successive points to win the match.

Bopanna and Ebden will take on the Dutch duo of Tallon Griekspoor and Bart Stevens in the semifinals.
