Former South African cricket captain AB de Villiers has dropped hints of potentially coaching the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team in the upcoming edition of the IPL 2024. The 40-year-old revealed that Virat Kohli expressed interest in having him back in the setup, although there hasn't been any official communication from the franchise's side yet.

ABD confirmed his availability

In 2023, RCB honored AB de Villiers alongside Chris Gayle by inducting them into their Hall of Fame. Following this, de Villiers joined the broadcast team. He plans to continue in this role as he mentioned that he would soon travel to Mumbai to join the broadcast team. However, he also expressed openness to a coaching role if the head coach Andy Flower, or captain Faf du Plessis deem it necessary.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, de Villiers stated, "Nothing confirmed yet, Virat has hinted that he might want me to come over and spend a bit of time with him and some of the batters. That call will come from Andy Flower, Faf, and the team. For now, I'm just going to be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL. I'm doing a bit of commentating."

A splendid career ended

De Villiers retired from professional cricket in November 2022, a decision that broke the hearts of cricket fans across the globe. Many claimed that he should continue his career given his continued fitness and form. Throughout his IPL career spanning 184 matches, he hammered 5162 runs at an impressive strike rate of 151.69. After their retirement, he has mostly focused on broadcasting and content creation on his YouTube channel.

ABD expressed his disappointment on removal of Markram from SRH's captaincy

Expressing his disappointment, de Villiers also commented on Aiden Markram's removal as the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team in the IPL. He stated that Markram has a successful stint as captain in South Africa's T20 tournaments and expected a longer tenure for him as captain in the IPL.

"It's a bit of an upset to me to see Aiden Markram being moved across and sort of just had to make way for Pat Cummins there, even though Aiden Markram has won back-to-back SA20 tournaments," De Villiers said.
