Olympics bronze medalist M C Mary Kom stepped down from Chef-de-Mission of India's Paris Olympics contingent on Friday. The celebrated boxer cited personal reasons for the unexpected move.

The news agency PTI quoted, "Embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, but I am left with no choice."

Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha confirmed the latest development. She stated that a replacement would be named after appropriate consultations with the IOC.

In her letter to PT Usha, the six-time world champion stated that it is embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice. 

Furthermore, she stated that she would be available to cheer on India and the athletes competing in this Olympic Games. 

PT Usha's response

Responding to the letter, PT Usha stated in her written response, "I completely understand her request and respect her decision." She also added that she has conveyed support from IOA. She also requested everyone to respect the privacy of the legendary boxer.

What are duties of Chef-de-mission?

The Chef De Mission is a volunteer position, which aids in overseeing the Games program within their designated area. Their role involves assisting the Games Coordinator and Regional Sport Team Managers in executing various tasks such as planning, logistics, and communication to facilitate the athletes, coaches, and managers in navigating the Games environment effectively.

Furthermore, the Chef De Mission is tasked with safeguarding the well-being of the athletes, maintaining communication with the organizing committee regarding various matters, and being prepared to address any controversies that may arise.
