Andy Murray was defeated by Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, and as a result, he was eliminated from the ongoing US Open 2023.

To advance to the third round, Dimitrov secured a 6-3 6-4 6-1 victory and appeared to be in excellent shape.  Murray, who previously won the US Open in 2012, battled valiantly against Grigor Dimitrov, but eventually ran out of energy.

Speaking after the match, Murray said, “It’s obviously disappointing, to not play how you would like. Maybe I need to accept that, these events, I had the deep runs and everything that I felt like I’m capable of, might not be there, as well.” He further added, “I still enjoy everything that goes into playing at a high level. I enjoy the work. The training and trying to improve and trying to get better, I do still enjoy that. That’s what keeps me going.”

Murray has played some solid tennis this season after nearly retiring in 2019 owing to a hip problem. He also noted that he was at his highest ranking (37th) since getting a metal hip implanted in his body after winning the first round at Flushing Meadows. Despite this, he was only able to go to the Australian Open third round and the second round of Wimbledon in 2023.

Murray served poorly in the first set, committing two double faults and losing two service games, and Dimitrov made the crucial break. After Murray’s second shaky serve game to start the second set, he was quickly in the lead by a set and a break.

When Dimitrov served with the break at 4-3 in the second set, they were a crucial opportunity for Murray, but the Bulgarian double faulted twice, giving the Briton a break point. On the break point, a protracted 33-stroke rally ensued, but Dimitrov prevailed. The Bulgarian survived the service game and completed the set’s serving to claim the three-set victory.
