Aryna Sabalenka reached her first U.S. Open final by defeating Madison Keys by 0-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (10-5) on Thursday night.

On Saturday, No. 2 seed Sabalenka will compete against No. 6 seed Coco Gauff.

The Australian Open winner had a dismal 1-5 record in the Grand Slam semifinals, including two consecutive losses in the New York round.

More on the match and Sabalenka

She prevailed in this match by winning the two tiebreakers, 17-6 overall. She made a mistake in believing she had won it after her seventh point and had to start again in the second one after forgetting the tiebreakers in pivotal sets run to 10. Even if she loses, the 25-year-old Belarussian is already certain to go to the top of the women’s standings.

When the 17th-seeded Keys breezed through the first set in under 30 minutes and took a 5-3 lead in the second, it looked like that was what she was going to do on Thursday. Sabalenka banged her racket on a towel box in the corner of the court near her guest box early in the second set after being broken. She then threw her racket in their direction, but it missed them and fell on the court instead.

Keys was trying for a second trip to the U.S. Open final, where she lost to Sloane Stephens in 2017.
