India made history by achieving the top spot in the One Day International (ODI) rankings after a comfortable five-wicket victory over Australia in the first game of a three-game series in Mohali on Friday. This achievement solidifies further India’s dominance in cricket across all formats, as they are currently ranked first in both Test and T20 International (T20I) rankings.

This extraordinary feat marks only the second instance in men’s cricket history where a team recognized by the ICC has secured the No. 1 ranking in all formats. Previously, South Africa accomplished this remarkable feat in August 2012.

India, with 116 rating points, overtook Pakistan (115) to claim the number one position in the ICC ODI rankings. While Australia maintains its third-place ranking, the gap between the top teams has widened as Australia’s rating dropped by two points to 111.

The Indian team now has a chance to maintain their No. 1 ranking as they are heading into the World Cup if they win the series against Australia. Meanwhile, Australia missed their opportunity to reach the top spot, as they needed a series whitewash to top the list. Despite not reaching the Asia Cup final, Pakistan managed to retain their No. 1 spot.

Both India and Australia had opportunities to secure the top ODI ranking during the Asia Cup and the South Africa series, but both faltered in crucial matches. The loss against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup ensured that India would not reach the top. Nevertheless, Pakistan could still claim the top spot if Australia wins the remaining two matches in the series.

Match highlights

Indian seamer Mohammed Shami delivered a career-best performance, completing a five-wicket haul for 51 runs. India’s top-order batsmen also performed superbly, securing a comfortable victory. Australia, batting first, were bowled out for 276 runs in 50 overs. In response, four of India’s top six batsmen scored half-centuries, allowing the home team to chase down the target with eight balls to spare.

Although India has not yet won either of the first two World Test Championships, suffering defeats to New Zealand and Australia, they maintain a slight edge over Australia in the ICC Test team rankings. Additionally, they occupy the top position in the T20I rankings, despite their limited success in T20 World Cups.
