Two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen secured India’s first medal in Boxing at the Asian Games 2023 with a dominant game against her Jordanian opponent Hanan Nassar in the 45 – 50kg quarterfinal at the ongoing multi-sport continental event.

The Jordanian pugilist Nassar failed to contest her dominant opponent and was outcasted by the Nikhat Zareen as the referee had to stop the contest (RSC) with the remaining 53 seconds on the clock in the first round of her bout at the Hangzhou.

With this win, Nikaht Zareen qualifies for the Paris Olympics and also confirms a bronze medal for herself. Although, the Indian pugilist will look to improve the color of the medal.

Gold in Men’s 50m 3P team event

India’s 50m Rifle men’s team of Aishwarya Tomar, Swapnil Kusale, and Akhil Sheoran clinched the gold medal in the team event setting up a new world record at the ongoing 19th Asain Games. This is India’s 7th gold in shooting and 15th medal overall in the continental multi-sport event at the Asian Games 2023.

India surpassed the previous record held by the USA, scored eight points ahead, and achieved a huge total of 1769. The previous record was set in the last year in Peru.

Swapnil Kusale and Aishwarya Tomar both scored the same score of 591 in the qualification event, securing the top two spots and securing their place in finals scheduled for later in the day. Notably, their brilliant performance also established new records for the qualification stage in both the Asian Games and Asian shooting records.

India’s dream run in the shooting arena at the Asian Games has produced 15 medals of which five of them are golds and the medal prospects are likely to continue in the coming days.

Swapnil, a medal contender at next year’s Olympic Games in Paris, was on fire, smashing the qualification Asian and Asian Games records on his way to a superb 591.
