Tennis world's stalwarts, Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka were honored with the International Tennis Federation's prestigious award of 'ITF World Champions 2023' on Thursday. The pair had an exceptional year, where they managed to reach at least the semis of all four Grand Slam events. They are also the only players to achieve the feat.

Djokovic rewrites history

Djokovic continues to shatter multiple records as the veteran player claimed his eighth ITF World Champion award. He finished the year on high by claiming the top spot of the ATP for a record eighth time. The 26-year-old bagged the Australian Open, French Open and US Open this year, which also took his majors' tally to 24. He was also the runner-up at the Wimbledon.

Speaking to the International Tennis Federation, Novak Djokovic said, "It’s the crown of the season, finishing the year as No. 1 in the world." He added, "I think it’s a dream of every tennis player. It’s one of the most difficult things to do in our sport. Winning Grand Slams and being No. 1 in the world are probably the pinnacles of the sport."

Sabalenka's dream debut

On the other hand, Sabalenka received the honour for the first time. This year, she won the Australian Open and managed to enter the semifinals of the French Open and Wimbledon. She also reached No.1 in the WTA rankings in September and finished the year at No. 2 in her debut year. Polland's Iga Swiatek held the top spot.

After winning the award, Aryna Sabalenka said, "2023 has been an incredible season for me and I’m very happy to be named ITF World Champion. From winning my first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open to reaching world No. 1 for the first time, it has been an amazing year. I’m very grateful to my family, my team and my fans for their support in 2023 and I can’t wait to get back out on court for the new season in January."
