IND vs IRE: In their opening match of the 2024 T20 World Cup, India secured an eight-wicket win over Ireland, thanks to the efforts of Captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. The match, held in New York on Wednesday, saw Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah's stellar bowling performance, which dismissed Ireland for a meager 96 runs.

India's chase began on a shaky note under challenging batting conditions. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggled initially, with Kohli eventually being caught at the boundary after scoring just one run, leaving India at 22 for 1. Rishabh Pant then joined Rohit Sharma at the crease.

Rohit, Pant steadies ship

The partnership between Rohit and Pant proved crucial, as they shared a 54-run stand that steadied the innings. Rohit Sharma, who played the role of the aggressor, hit his 38th T20I fifty and achieved big milestones, including reaching 4,000 T20I runs and 600 sixes. Unfortunately, he retired hurt on 52 runs, but by then, India was well on its way to victory. The team reached the target with 15 balls to spare, marking a strong start to their World Cup campaign.

Dominant bowling display

Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Captain Rohit Sharma's decision proved correct under overcast conditions. Arshdeep Singh set the tone early, troubling the Irish batsmen with his impeccable length deliveries. His dismissal of seasoned campaigners Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie in the Powerplay left Ireland reeling at 26 for 2.

Relentless pressure from Siraj, Pandya

Mohammed Siraj maintained the pressure from the other end, making it challenging for the Irish openers to find their rhythm. Hardik Pandya, introduced as the second change bowler delivered a perfect nip-backer to breach Lorcan Tucker's defense. His diverse range of deliveries earned him three crucial wickets, including that of Tucker and Harry Tector.

Ireland's struggle against India's pace battery

Facing the relentless Indian bowling attack, Ireland's batting lineup crumbled under pressure. Despite Gareth Delany's valiant effort with an unbeaten 26, Ireland struggled to build partnerships and fell short of a competitive total.

Setting the tone for World Cup campaign

India's comprehensive victory in their opening match also set a formidable tone for their T20 World Cup campaign. With a strong bowling unit and a resilient batting lineup, India aims to continue their winning momentum and clinch the coveted title.
