In the 12th match of CPL 2023, Trinbago Knight Riders became the first victim of the ‘Red card’ when they were behind the required over rate before the beginning of their last three overs against St Kitts and Nevin Patriots on Sunday in Basseterre.

As per the rule, Sunil Narine had to leave the field, with only ten players for the final over. Sherfane Rutherford capitalised on the TKR’s misery and smashed 18 runs in the final over.

What is a ‘Red Card’ in CPL?

Red cards have been introduced to regulate slow overrates for both men’s and women’s teams. As per the new rules of the CPL, if the bowling side doesn’t start the 18th over in time, then one additional fielder enters the 30-yard circle, with only four fielders allowed outside. If they miss the time limit at the start of the 19th over, one more fielder has to enter the 30-yard circle, leaving only three players outside the circle. And if the bowling side failed to start the final over on time, they would be shown a red card and one player of their choice must go off the field, leaving only 10 fielders on the field.

The rule follows the 85-minute per innings rule for the T20 format that suggests the 17th, 18th and 19th overs of the innings must be completed by 72 minutes and 15 seconds, 76 minutes and 30 seconds and 80 minutes and 45 seconds, respectively.

The Knight Riders caused all three penalties and that forced captain Kieron Pollard to send Sunil Narine off the field. Pollard was displeasured by the red card rule and on the broadcast after the game, he said, “To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done. We are like pawns, and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalised for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous.”

In international cricket as well, penalties for slow over rates have gained significant attention in recent years. The International Cricket Council (ICC) implemented various methods to maintain the fast pace of the game irrespective of the format, including penalities for slow over rates after the Ashes 2023.
