New Delhi: India's javelin sensation Sumit Antil secured his second consecutive Paralympic gold medal on Monday, September 2, in Paris. Entering the competition as a hot favorite, Sumit lived up to expectations, delivering a record-breaking performance that left his competitors in the dust. His dominance was evident as he shattered his own Paralympic record twice during the event, showcasing his perfect form from the very beginning.

Ground-breaking record

In the Tokyo Paralympics, Sumit set a new record with a throw of 68.55 meters to claim gold. However, in Paris, he surpassed that mark with his very first throw, reaching an impressive 69.11 meters. Elated by his achievement, Sumit further extended his lead with a jaw-dropping throw of 70.59 meters on his second attempt, breaking his own record once again.

Tough competition between competitors

Sumit’s third throw measured 66.66 meters, and his fourth attempt was a foul. However, he bounced back with a solid fifth throw of 69.04 meters, virtually securing the gold medal. Despite a late challenge from Sri Lanka's Dulan Kodithuwakku, who tried to close the gap, Sumit’s final throw of 66.57 meters sealed his victory. India's presence was strong in the event, with Sandeep and Sanjay Sandip Sargar also competing. However, they finished in 4th and 7th places, respectively.

India's medal tally rises

Sandeep’s best throw was 62.80 meters on his third attempt, while Sanjay’s top throw was 58.03 meters, also on his third try. With Sumit's gold medal, India's overall medal tally at the Paralympics has now increased to 14, including 3 golds, 5 silvers, and 6 bronzes.

Sumit's hardwork and achievements

Sumit’s immense dedication and hard work led to his first international medal at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in 2019. His success continued, and in 2021, he made history by winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, setting a new world record in the process.

Sumit Antil’s early life is a testament to his resilience and determination, qualities that have made him a shining star in Indian athletics.
