Paris Olympics 2024: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat achieved a historic feat by defeating Japan's undefeated champion Yui Susaki in the women's 50kg freestyle category, securing her spot in the final. This win represents a significant milestone as Vinesh becomes the first Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final. She is now poised to compete for the gold medal in the ultimate bout against USA's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt, scheduled for Wednesday, August 07.

Vinesh's path to the final was marked by extraordinary achievements, starting with her impressive victory over the defending Olympic champion and four-time world champion Susaki in a thrilling pre-quarter-final match. She proceeded to the semi-finals after a hard-fought 7-5 win against Ukraine's Oksana Livach. In the semi-final contest at the Champ-de-Mars Arena, the 29-year-old faced off against Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman.

Vinesh's video call with mother

She secured her place in the final with ease, achieving a convincing 5-0 victory. Following her qualification for the women's 50kg freestyle final at the Champ-de-Mars Arena in Paris, Vinesh had a heartfelt moment with her family via video call. During the call, she assured her mother of her determination to return home with the gold medal.

In a video shared by United World Wrestling, Vinesh is seen conversing with her mother during the video call. The wrestler sends blowing kisses to her mother. Then said "Gold laana hai! Gold (I will bring gold)."

Vinesh assures India's 4th Medal at Paris Olympics 2024

Vinesh has assured herself a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 by winning her semi-final match against Guzman. This will be India's fourth medal at the Games. She now has the chance to make history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic gold medal, and the first female wrestler from India to achieve this feat. 

Currently, Sakshi Malik is the only Indian female wrestler to have won an Olympic medal, a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics. This is Vinesh's third Olympics, and she has the opportunity to overcome past disappointments and prove her critics wrong by winning gold. If she succeeds, she will join Neeraj Chopra and Abhinav Bindra as the only Indians to have won individual Olympic gold medals.
