The health update of India’s star opener, Shubman Gill, has raised concerns among Team India fans as well as cricket enthusiasts worldwide during the ICC World Cup 2023.

Gill, who has been battling dengue, was admitted to a hospital in Chennai due to a drop in his platelet count. This development has led to his withdrawal from the upcoming match against Pakistan, further diminishing the prospects of his participation in the tournament. In his absence, it will be Ishan Kishan who will open alongside Rohit Sharma.

On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a health update on Shubman Gill. The update revealed that Gill had not traveled with the team to Delhi and would undergo treatment in Chennai. According to the latest information, Gill’s platelet count decreased, prompting his hospitalisation. As of now, Shubman Gill remains admitted to a hospital in Chennai.

Shubman not playing India vs Afghanistan?

Shubman Gill’s struggle with dengue was confirmed last week. Following this revelation, Gill had already been ruled out of the match against Afghanistan. There were hopes that he might recover in time to play against Pakistan on Saturday. However, given the nature of diseases like dengue, it typically takes at least two weeks to fully recover. Consequently, Gill’s participation in the match against Pakistan seems highly unlikely.

It’s worth noting that the BCCI is unlikely to announce a replacement for Gill, indicating their confidence in his eventual recovery. Shubman Gill has been one of India’s top run-scorers in ODIs this year. Once he regains full fitness, he could be a game-changer for India in the World Cup.

Shubman Gill’s absence due to dengue has already impacted India’s campaign in the ICC World Cup 2023. He missed the match against Afghanistan, and his participation against Pakistan is now in jeopardy. If India manages to win against both Afghanistan and Pakistan without Gill, he might find it challenging to make a comeback into the team for an extended period.

In the meantime, cricket fans and Team India supporters will eagerly await Shubman Gill’s recovery and his potential return to the squad.
