Spanish racer Jorge Martin won the maiden MotoGP race in India with a masterful display in the sprint at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.

Ruling champion Francesco Bagnaia secured second place at the podium, and Marc Marquez finished in the top three for the first time since the Portuguese Grand Prix sprint back in March. Italian speedster Bagnaia finished 1.389 seconds behind Martin, while Marquez won the tense battle for third with Brad Binder.

Martin told TNT Sports after his victory, “It was tricky and stressful because of the conditions. The last practice before the race was quite complicated, but I understood why. Straight away, I started well and put a good pace on the track and then I tried to control the gap between me and Pecco, to try to get more information for tomorrow”.

The sprint race was cut down to 11 laps this weekend, while the major Grand Prix on Sunday was three circuits shorter at 21 due to the extremely hot, humid, and damp weather conditions.

Unfavourable conditions for race

After persistent afternoon rain, the track took a while to dry out, and when the race did start, it met with controversy. Luca Marini and polesitter Marco Bezzecchi collided in the first corner, giving Martin the advantage that he would never lose. Pol Espargaro and Stefan Bradl were the other two victims of that collision, and on lap three, Joan Mir fell, and it appeared that his hand got caught in the exhaust.

Johann Zarco surrendered the sixth spot, while Bezzecchi made a remarkable comeback to move ahead of Maverick Vinales in the final five laps of the race. After being knocked down early in the race, Bezzecchi finished the race in a remarkable manner and managed to place sixth.

The top two finishers in Qualifying 1 were Alex Marquez and Raul Fernandez. However, Marquez fractured three ribs, was forced to withdraw from the rest of the weekend’s racing and is probably going to miss next week’s race in Japan.

What is MotoGP?

The most prestigious motorcycle race in the world is called MotoGP. There are no pit stops during the race and it is nonstop from beginning to end.

Two riders from each of the 11 teams’ rosters make up the 22 cyclists for the 2023 season. In 2023, this global sport will host 21 Grand Prix competitions. India will be one of these places this season.

What is the number of laps?

A total of 24 laps are completed on this circuit during the 119-kilometer Moto GP event. Similar to how the Moto2 race is 19 circuits long and the Moto3 race is 17 laps long, their respective total distances are 84.3 km and 94.2 km.
